NEW YORK, New York - 49ers left tackle Joe Staley is questionable for Sunday's road game against the New York Giants with a knee injury.
Staley returned to the practice field for the first time Friday as a limited participant.
"He’s done all the walk-thrus and things, so he’ll be out there today and we’re going there," head coach Jim Tomsula said Friday. " we’re going to get him moving around. I’m not going to put anybody in danger. He’s going out today and we’ll get a much better idea on things. He’s moving around and doing all that."
If Staley can't go, left guard Alex Boone is the most likely candidate to replace Staley at left tackle, which would like force rookie Ian Silberman into the starting lineup to get his first NFL snaps. Second-year guard Brandon Thomas has not been active yet this season, after missing all of last season recovering from a pre-draft ACL tear.
The 49ers offensive line has struggled this season, allowing pressure to Colin Kaepernick on 43 percent of his drop backs, one of the worst rates in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus. The 49ers enter Sunday's game with the league's lowest-scoring offense, averaging just points per game.
Outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks is listed as doubtful to play after leaving the team this week. He flew to Louisana following the passing of his 40-year-old sister, Krsunthia, from lupus. Brooks' agent told Niners Digest this week that Brooks would not play and funeral services were pending.
Tight end Vernon Davis has been ruled out for the second straight week with a knee injury. Davis sustained in the injury in Week 3's loss to the Arizona Cardinals and has practiced sparingly this week.
Here's the entire injury report:
Out: Vernon Davis (knee)
Doubtful: Ahmad Brooks (not injury related, shoulder)
Out: DE Robert Ayers (hamstring), WR Victor Cruz (calf), LB Devon Kennard (hamstring), DE George Selvie (calf)
Questionable: LB Jonathan Casillas (calf), CB Jayron Hosley (concussion), CB Trumaine McBride (groin)
Probable: TE Jerome Cunningham (knee), T Ereck Flowers (ankle), DT Markus Kuhn (knee)
