Staley sustained a knee injury in last week's loss to the Packers, but played in all of the team's 50 offensive snaps. He missed the practice Wednesday and Thursday of this week, but returned Friday and was listed as 'limited.'
Saturday, the 49ers released cornerback Shareece Wright, who never made it to the active roster after signing with San Francisco in the spring. The team promoted practice squad player Andrew Tiller to the 53-man roster to take Wright's place. Tiller was made active for the Sunday over sixth-round draft pick Ian Silberman.
Tiller received positive reviews for his play in the preseason, playing left guard as a reserve going against reserves. The 49ers' situation at guard is an area of concern for the league's lowest-scoring offense. Right guard Jordan Devey is Pro Football Focus' 94th-ranked guard, contributing to an offensive line that's made Colin Kaepernick the second-most pressured quarterback in the league coming into Sunday, according to the site's data.
Tiller played 115 snaps in the preseason, with 99 coming at left guard and 16 at right guard. Second-year player Brandon Thomas will be active for the first time after missing his rookie season recovering from a pre-draft ACL tear.
Wright, who started 27 games over his final two seasons with the Chargers, started the 49ers' first preseason game against the Texans, but continued to tumble down the depth chart as August wore on, leading to being inactive all four games of his stint with San Francisco.
As expected, outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks will not play. He remains away from the team following the death of his sister earlier this week. Tight end Vernon Davis remains out with a knee injury, while receiver Quinton Patton will play despite suffering a concussion in last week's loss to the Packers.
