SANTA CLARA, Calif. - 49ers outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks will not play Sunday against the first place Cardinals after being placed in the NFL's concussion protocol this week.
Head coach Jim Tomsula said Monday Brooks came into the team's facility this week with concussion-like symptoms following last week's loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Brooks practiced in pads for the first time on Friday in a non-contact jersey, but was cleared to play Sunday.
Brooks is second on the 49ers with four sacks, including one last week of Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. His replacements will be third-year player Corey Lemonier and rookie Eli Harold. The 49ers announced Lemonier would start.
Arguably San Francisco's best defender, Aaron Lynch, leads the NFL with 12 tackles for loss, and leads the team with 6.5 sacks.
For the Cardinals, former 49ers left guard Mike Iupati will play after coming into to Sunday's game listed as probable after suffering a scary neck injury two weeks ago in Seattle. Receiver Michael Floyd (hamstring), defensive back Patrick Peterson (ankle) and defensive back Deone Bucannon (concussion) will all play.
For the 49ers, newly-acquired linebacker Ray Ray Armstrong will sit after joining the team mid week. And after being deactivated last week for the first time this season, defensive lineman Tank Carradine will be available Sunday after Glenn Dorsey was placed on season-ending injured reserve after having surgery Tuesday to repair a torn ACL suffered on the first play against Seattle.
Expect Carradine to play on passing situations and rush from the edge as opposed to the defensive tackle position. Carradine has trimmed weight and is focusing on returning to his more natural defensive end spot after playing in a 4-3 at Florida State.
