Whiting on the way
Q: Did the news of the trade catch you by surprise? Whiting: Yeah, it definitely caught me by surprise. I knew the whole Terrell Owens thing was going down today and that the news would be out. I knew that the Eagles were talking to him before the whole thing happened so it was definitely a surprise but deep in my mind I knew that it was a possibility. Q: What's your reaction on coming to the 49ers? Whiting: Philadelphia was a great place for me. I loved being here for six years. I got so many opportunities here and the coaches were really good to me. It is a great organization and it is tough leaving, and it was tough for them to trade me away, but the 49ers would be one place that I would want to go. Being from the Bay Area, I have a ton of friends and family in the Bay Area./p> Q: Can you talk about your Bay Area ties? Whiting: I was born in Santa Rosa, and lived most of my life down in Long Beach in Southern California. My mom is from the Sonoma area; actually my mom and dad went to Sonoma State, which is where they met. I came to UC Berkeley, my grandparents and my mom's family still lives in the Bay Area. I decided to go to Cal because I used to go there a lot as a little kid. After college my parents moved back up to the Bay Area and had been living in Vallejo for the last couple years, I also have a vacation home in Lake Tahoe. During the off season I am in California and the Bay Area most of the time. Q: What is the position on the D-line that you feel your the best at? Whiting: I definitely feel like the left defensive end is my best position as an every down player. I still feel like I can help the team out as a defensive tackle position in nickel situation. I feel like I am a better pass rusher on the inside and I feel like I am a better run defender on the outside. So I have always been some kind of a "tweener". The last few years playing left defensive end here for the Eagles has made me very comfortable at that position. I know that I am never going to be that guy that has 12 or 13 sacks who is going to be a speed rusher that is just not the way that I am made. I feel like I can be a significant run stopper out at the end and get some pressure out there. That is where I feel more comfortable. Q: Due to your shoulder injury, do you have any doubts about passing your physical with the 49ers? Whiting: It was something that was definitely of some concern last year and it was something that was a fact that was the way that it was. My body is healing up from the season and I am able to rest up now and my body is feeling a lot better then it did two months ago. I am just glad that my injuries are healing up and that I am feeling a lot better from a long tough season. With the Eagles we have gone to the playoffs the last three seasons and that just adds an extra two or three games onto the end of a season, so three of those season in a row that just adds a lot of ware and tear on the body. I am feeling pretty good right now and we will just have to see when it is time for the physical. I am not positive when the physical will take place, but I know that it will be in the next few days. Q: What is your view on the 49ers organization? Whiting: I haven't been too aware of what has been going on with the 49ers right now. Just in the last couple days I have been catching up. I know because of salary cap reasons that the 49ers have had to let some players go. I knew that in the last couple of years the 49ers have been a really young team and it is exciting you are on a team like that, that is young and have a lot of possibilities and in the NFL today you never know who will be a great team. I feel like there are 32 teams out there right that want to go to the playoffs and that they have a chance to go to the playoffs and win the Super Bowl and I am sure that is the attitude among the 49ers, I know that they have lost some players but I am sure that there are 60 other guys there right now that are trying to work their butts off and trying to win some football games. Q: How do you feel about being traded for Terrell Owens? Whiting: It will be shown in media headlines and things like that. That was what the 49ers got for him. I definitely don't believe that it was a direct trade. It is a little strange, I know that. I hope that the 49ers are happy with what they have received. I am the kind of player that is going to go out there and play my hardest and that is all I can do.
