Training camp quick hitters

Taing a quick run around NFL training camps:

Saints-Second-year Linebacker Gets off to a Good Start

Former third-round pick (2003) Cie Grant has taken over #1 position at middle linebacker due to very solid start thus far in training camp. Rookie middle linebacker Courtney Watson has been limited by a quad injury and is falling behind. Veteran middle linebacker Orlando Ruff was told before camp started that the two young linebackers would be given the first chance at the starting job.

Grant has done a solid job in pursuit of ball carriers and has shown in improvement in his pass coverage skills.

Eagles-Simoneau's Job Secure

Eagle fans everywhere seemed to believe that when the club re-signed middle linebacker Nate Wayne a breather if needed with Trotter on the field.

Elsewhere, starting defensive tackle Correll Buckhalter (eye) missed his second straight day of practice and is day-to-day.

Titans-Starting Linebacker's Season Ends

Starting outside linebacker Rocky Boiman takes over for Sirmon in the starting lineup. Sirmon is a big loss for the club because not only is he a starter, he's excellent in pass coverage.

Bears-Hamstring Injuries Mount

The Bears are having trouble putting together a formidable practice lineup due to injury.

Missing time this week are:

Offense

Backup running back Anthony Thomas (abdominal strain). He's been in a lot of pain and can't practice. These type of injuries some times are later diagnosed as a hernia.

Backup running back Adrian Peterson (hamstring). Day-to-day.

Starting wide receiver Marty Booker (hamstring). Day-to-day.

Backup wide receiver Justin Gage (hamstring). Day-to-day.

Starting tight-end John Gilmore (hamstring-week-to-week).

Offensive guard Mike Gandy (groin). Day-to-Day.

Defense

Starting defensive end Alex Brown (groin). Day-to-day.

Starting middle linebacker Brian Urlacher (hamstring-out 4-6 weeks).

Starting cornerback Jerry Azumah (shoulder). He got a favorable exam on Monday and could practice the rest of the week.

These type of injuries are symptomatic of the high temperatures of training camp. Muscles tighten and it's hard to keep loose.
