The Niners have played the last eight weeks with 51 players on their active roster due to salary-cap constraints. But doing so allowed them to save enough money to add minimum-salary rookies to the roster this week. Defensive end Menson Holloway, one of the team's three sixth-round draft choices this year, was promoted from the team's practice squad - where he has spent the entire season - to add depth at that position.
Starting left end Chike Okeafor fractured his right fibula in last week's loss to the Eagles and is likely out for the remainder of the regular season, though he hopes to return for the playoffs.
On Wednesday, the Niners added a 53rd player when they signed rookie guard Chad Ward off the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad and put him on their active roster. Ward (6-foot-4, 321 pounds) was Jacksonville's sixth-round draft choice this season. The Niners also signed rookie defensive tackle Ennis Davis (6-4, 308) to their practice squad. Davis was a seventh-round draft choice of the New Orleans Saints this year.
