Firing time

The 49ers have scheduled a news conference later this afternoon during which owner John York will announce that he has fired Dennis Erickson as the team's coach, and that Terry Donahue will step down as San Francisco's general manager.

A team spokesman said only that York would address "general" issues, but several sources have indicated to SFI that Erickson already has been fired. Erickson still was at the 49ers facility as of 1 p.m. PST.

A 49ers assistant coach said all assistants have been asked not to comment on the situation until there has been an announcement, a clear indication Erickson has been canned.

Sources also have indicated that Terry Donahue has reached a settlement with York to step down as the team's general manager. Donahue signed a four-year contract extension on Sept. 14.
