Tollner a Niners coaching candidate

The 49ers are moving swiftly to replace quarterbacks coach Greg Olson, who resigned Monday to return to Purdue University. The team says it is in the process of interviewing several candidates for the position, the most prominent being coaching veteran Ted Tollner.

Tollner was at the team's Santa Clara headquarters earlier this week discussing the position. Tollner, 61, certainly would have the experience to slide into the role on San Francisco's staff with a minimum of transition. With the college draft coming up in April followed by minicamps, the Niners wouldn't necessarily have time to train a young coach regarding the nuances of the team and what is expected from the position. Tollner was the head coach at USC from 1983-86 and began a seven-year stretch as an NFL assistant the next season after leaving the Trojans. He was an offensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers and has experience as a quarterbacks coach, too, having occupied that role for the Los Angeles Rams from 1992-93.

Tollner has plenty of ties to the 49ers. Tollner's 1986 USC staff included a receivers/special teams coordinator named Steve Mariucci and an offensive line coach named Pat Morris. Mariucci now is San Francisco's head coach and Morris coaches the Niners' offfensive line.
