Turnstile continues for top prospects

One by one they come in. The Niners entertained two top college prospects at their Santa Clara headquarters on Tuesday, another will be in for a visit today and more are sure to follow this week as the team attempts to pinpoint the top candidates for its picks in the April 20 NFL Draft.

Michigan State defensive tackle Josh Shaw and Arizona State offensive tackle Levi Jones were in for workouts Tuesday, a busy day at the 49ers facility during which the team also visited with free-agent guard Ron Stone and his wife.

Niners general manager Terry Donahue said Washington State safety Lamont Thompson would visit the team Wednesday. Thompson, rated as one of the top five safeties available on many draft boards, is the fifth college safety the Niners have had in for a look in recent weeks.

The team now has had more than a dozen college prospects in for workouts. The NFL limit is 20, but Thompson doesn't count against that figure because he qualifies as a "local," since Washington State is within a proximity region to San Francisco that is allowed by the NFL.
