Q & A with Josh Shaw

"I was killing everybody. I mean, they couldn't stop me. I had two interceptions, and I had 50 tackles before the start of the sixth game. So I was averaging 10 tackles a game. I was really tearing it up until I got hurt. I was getting better every game, so there's no telling where I would have been at the end of the season."

Q: Where are you in terms of your knee rehabilitation?
Shaw: Right now, I (just) started running. It's looking real good, I'm just taking it slow, making sure I build my muscles up before I start running. Everything is coming along. I couldn't ask for anything more. It's coming along good in rehab, just day by day, working hard.

Q: Did you expect with the knee injury that you'd go in the draft about where you did?
Shaw: Yeah, I thought I'd go around the fifth round, no later than sixth probably, around that area. But going into the draft, I really didn't have any expectations because I was hurt. I figured I'd be a late-round pick. San Francisco seemed to really like me when they flew me out there.

Q: Did you have any concern the injury might prevent you from being drafted at all?
Shaw: At first there was some concern. But the way I started rehabbing, and I was coming along so well, and all the other doctors were saying I was going to be OK, it was just going to take some time getting the muscles back strong in there. They don't see any reason why I can't play to the level that I was playing at.

Q: How would you describe your level of play before the injury?
Shaw: I was killing everybody. I mean, they couldn't stop me. I had two interceptions, and I had 50 tackles before the start of the sixth game. So I was averaging 10 tackles a game. I was really tearing it up until I got hurt. I was getting better every game, so there's no telling where I would have been at the end of the season.

Q: After such a strong start, how difficult was it to deal with the injury emotionally?
Shaw: It didn't really do too much to me that way. At first, I was down a little bit, yeah. But then you look at it: You know, it's football. It's a game you play, and bodies fly everywhere and anything can happen. So I didn't let it get me down. So I just starting working hard, figuring if I work real hard at it I'd be able to come back. I was probably was down for about a week and then came right back with the rehab, doing a little bit at a time until I could do something else.

Q: Are you excited about getting an opportunity with this organization?
Shaw: Yeah, I'm excited. What I'm really excited about is learning from the older tackles that they've got there. I know those guys have a lot to teach. They've been playing for so long and they're so good that I know they've got a lot of techniques and just a lot of know-how about the game. And I'm ready to learn.

Q: Did the Niners get a steal drafting you where they did?
Shaw: You're going to see. They got a real good deal. I'll be able to show them what I can do when I put the pads on.
