Q & A with Kevin Curtis

"Yes, sir. I'm a big hitter when it calls for it. My main job is to get guys down. I'm the last line of defense, and if I need to be a sure tackler, I am. But if I have an opportunity to put a big hit on somebody, I will."

Q: Did the 49ers select you about where you thought you'd be picked in the draft?

Curtis: I didn't know really what round I'd go. When I saw some safeties go, I just didn't know, but I knew San Francisco was interested. San Francisco was always my favorite team growing up, so it's an honor and a privilege to play for them.

Q: How did you know they were interested in you?

Curtis: They came and worked me out (right before the draft). One of the guys said they liked me on film and were very interested in me. (Niners defensive assistant Chris Beake) worked me out and he told me he liked the workout.

Q: How do you fit into the equation here and how do you think the Niners plan to use you?

Curtis: Well, they've got the Rams in their division, and they're going to spread a few outs. They need a lot of DBs. So, you know, wherever I can fit. Special teams probably come first, and I'm just going to try and help the team as much as possible.

Q: What do you consider to be your strengths as a safety?

Curtis: I think I'm a sure tackler and I'm a smart player. I have good speed and size. I've played up in the box and I've also played as a deep safety. I've done both of them. It just depends on the personnel what I do, because I'm kind of versatile. I know I'm just going to go out and try to help the team as much as possible.

Q: You say you're a sure tackler. Are you a big hitter?

Curtis: Yes, sir. I'm a big hitter when it calls for it. My main job is to get guys down. I'm the last line of defense, and if I need to be a sure tackler, I am. But if I have an opportunity to put a big hit on somebody, I will.

Q: What are your feelings about coming to the 49ers organization in particular?

Curtis: I love it. I've always heard great things about the San Francisco organization, how they are so very professional. Even though I've lived in Texas, and I'm from Texas, I've always been a San Fran 49er fan. It's a privilege. Me and my dad were talking about how it would be cool to play for our team. And now I get to play for our team. Even though we live in Cowboy country, me and my dad were 49ers fans growing up.

Q: How did you decide to go 49ers rather than Cowboys?

Curtis: I don't know how that came about. I mean, I was just always liking the 49ers. I'm just so happy to be on this team. I just want to go out there and play.
