Erratic day across the Bay

Highlights, lowlights and spotlights from the 49ers' trip across the San Francisco Bay to be tripped up 17-10 by their neighborhood rival Oakland Raiders:

--- So much for the first-team offense clicking into form at the end of the preseason.

--- At least the 49ers don't have to decide between Jose Cortez and Sebastian Janikowski.

--- The Niners just cannot let Jeff Garcia take shots like that.

--- Julian Peterson, keep your head up. And by the way, where are you?

--- Tim Rattay, that was much better. We knew you had it in you. And hoped you did, too. But we still wouldn't mind having a veteran like Rick Mirer around.

--- Kudos to Rattay on the precise, feathery throw and Cedrick Wilson on the nice corner-of-the-end-zone catch. That's the way you make touchdowns in the NFL, guys.

--- We like the way Jason Baker booms punts most of the time. But his tackling technique needs a little work.

--- Try and tell me now that the offensive line is going to be a cohesive unit when the season starts.

--- The Niners need to use Andre Carter on inside stunts much more often.

--- Any more questions about Tony Parrish? The preseason is providing a lot of positive answers.

--- Jimmy Williams has to do better than that fielding punts.

--- Sean Moran and Jim Flanigan were solid free-agent pickups who are really going to help the defensive line. Have we mentioned that yet?

--- The bigger, stronger Zack Bronson is developing into a terrific all-around free safety.

--- Terry Jackson returning kickoffs? We like that idea.

--- Contain that aggressiveness for between the lines, Jamie Winborn.

--- We're glad Ben Lynch is around, just in case.

--- Derek Smith needs to keep working on his pass drops. Please.

--- That's the way you need to plug the gap, Dana Stubblefield.

--- Thankfully, Dave Fiore is back at left guard now, because it sure looks like he'll need some time to settle in there.

--- Reggie McGrew had impressively avoided the injury bug all year. Until now.

--- We like what Jamal Robertson can do in the open field. How about teaching this guy to return kicks?

--- Chad Ward did not have a good evening. He wasn't the only backup offensive lineman with that distinction.

--- Rookie tight end Mark Anelli caught the one that didn't count. He dropped the one what would have.

--- And that adds up to a 1-3 preseason start. Just four more days until the next game. Not all of the 49ers you saw on Saturday still will be around for that one.
