Closing in on cutdown day

The Niners aren't leaving much suspense for Tuesday as they get down to the NFL-mandated 65-player roster limit. Quarterback Cade McNown will have season-ending shoulder surgery and be placed on injured reserve along with safety Kevin Curtis, and rookie Josh Shaw will be placed on the Reserve/Non Football injury list. After releasing seven players Monday, that means only three more most go by 1 p.m. Tuesday.

The most notable cuts Monday were safety John Keith and receiver/kick returner Vinny Sutherland, both players who once played key roles and ostensibly had futures with the 49ers.

The other Monday cuts were:

--- Offensive tackle John Feugill: He finished last season on the practice squad, put on some nice bulk in the offseason and was given a chance to compete for a backup tackle berth. But his performance didn't measure up in the preseason.

--- Offensive tackle Austin Lee: Team liked this converted defensive lineman, but he's not ready to play tackle in the NFL.

--- Running back Saladin McCullough: Isn't it slightly ironic that the 49ers' leading preseason rusher can't even make it past the first cut? McCullough is a tailback who was trying to make it with the wrong team.

--- Safety Brian Smith: Had a nice camp and probably deserved to make it to last cut. But he wasn't going to make team, so he's gone now.

--- Receiver Jeremy McDaniel: Lasted five days with team. Five days was all the 49ers needed. Has now been cut by the Niners and Buffalo Bills in the space of one week.
