Bryant Young: 'It may be my last game'

Bryant Young all but announced his retirement Saturday night after the 49ers' 20-13 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. He stopped short of actually doing it, but with San Francisco's final home game coming next Sunday against Tampa Bay, Young indicated a decision could be coming in the next few days so that fans who've followed the career of a 49er great can give him a final farewell at home.

"It's there … I'm thinking about it," Young said. "It may be my last (home) game. May be. I'm not 100 percent certain."

Young went on: "It's tough, man. The last few weeks, I've really been thinking about my future, and really listening to my body and if it's the right time to kind of walk away. I'll just say … It's nearing the end. My days are numbered. I just want to enjoy it if this is my last year, my last moments of being a Niner … It's possible."

In his 14th NFL season, Young is having another solid year and leads the 49ers with 6.5 sacks. The four-time All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler is in the winter of a stellar career at age 35, but he has played well enough this year to show that he still has plenty left in the tank.

But this disappointing season has clearly worn on him. Young, the last remaining link to the 49ers' last Super Bowl team of 1994, has been a constant while watching San Francisco go through three rebuilding projects during his career, and he was expecting to be part of a team that would be a contender again this season.

That development did not materialize, and Young seemed to take the losing this year harder than most of the team's other players.

"It's been a very tough year emotionally and mentally, kind of up and down, not the season I expected and everybody else expected," he said. "And that has been the difficult part, dealing with the emotional roller coaster."

Young appeared ready to say this was the end before deciding to take a little more time to think about it, or perhaps just take a few more days to put everything in place and make the announcement on his terms.

"My head right now is just enjoying this victory," Young said. "I'll address that when the time is appropriate about my future. Right now, I just want to enjoy this win. … I'll give enough time to let people know."
