The dust finally settles this afternoon

After two days of twiddling thumbs and spinning wheels, the 49ers finally have scheduled a 1 p.m. news conference this afternoon to shed some light on what apparently has been so very difficult to decide. And, yes, Mike Nolan will be at the podium, his job as head coach saved by some late filibustering. But Nolan won't be the only one there, team sources confirmed this morning.

The question is if Nolan will be sharing the front table with team owners John and/or Jed York, or Scot McCloughan, the team's vice president of player personnel who appears destined to become the team's new general manager, a move that could be announced as soon as today - and in fact may be the main item on the agenda.

But it certainly won't be the only item.

According to published reports, Nolan saved his job and will return for a fourth season as San Francisco's coach by agreeing to relinquish the control he has wielded as operational chief the past three seasons.

Diminished power for Nolan isn't the only change that's likely to be announced in the team's organizational structure, with changes in the team's coaching staff below him certain to come. It is being widely reported that Jim Hostler is out as offensivel coordinator - as expected - though no official announcement has been made.

That announcement, and ostensibly several others, will be saved for this afternoon.
