Moving up in playoffs means moving down in draft

The 49ers could select as high as 24th in the 2003 NFL draft, but they'll be aiming lower as long as they're playing the rest of this month.

The 49ers are tentatively slotted to draft between 24th and 26th overall in the first round, subject to the playoffs.

They currently are pegged at No. 26 after tie-breakers, but the Niners could move up one or two places if the teams immediately ahead of them in the draft order - the New York Giants and Indianapolis Colts - win their playoff games.

The 49ers, Giants and Colts each finished the regular season with 10-6 records, the only NFL teams to do so.

The Niners could fall to the 31st or 32nd overall selection if they reach the Super Bowl.

San Francisco had the 27th overall selection last year and picked University of Miami cornerback Mike Rumph.
