Veteran running back, released by the Eagles in March, signs a one-year deal with San Francisco.
The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of running back Brian Westbrook to a one-year contract today.
Westbrook was released by the Philadelphia Eagles in March. Two teams, the Rams and the Redskins, had shown interest in signing the 30-year-old back, whose career appeared in jeopardy following a series of concussions.
The 49ers were in the market for a running back after Glen Coffee told the team last week he was quitting football. His retirement created an open roster spot.
Rookie running back Anthony Dixon had a 100-yard rushing game Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, but Westbrook now gives coach Mike Singletary another option for Frank Gore's backup.
