Steve Weatherford Profile
The New York Giants have used the franchise tag on punter Steve Weatherford, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers also used the franchise designation on kicker Connor Barth, according to league sources and Barth's agent.
Weatherford had an outstanding Super Bowl, with three punts downed inside the 10-yard line.
One year after signing with the Giants, the former New York Jets standout has now been retained by the Giants under a one-year, $2.6 million tender.
The Giants have until July 16 to sign Weatherford, who averaged 45.7 yards last season, to a long-term deal.
Barth's franchise tender is also $2.6 million.
He made nearly $2 million last season.
Weatherford and Barth were both scheduled to be unrestricted free agents by March 13.
"I have been notified that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed the franchise tender on their kicker, Connor Barth," agent Rob Roche or RSR Sports Management said in a statement. "I have been negotiating with the Buccaneers on a contract for Connor. It is my hope that our negotiations will continue and result in a long-term contract that will reflect Connor's status as one of the elite kickers in the National Football League. Connor enjoys being a member of the Buccaneers organization and appreciates the great fans of the Buccaneers who reside in the Tampa metropolitan area."
