This is the time of year when NFL teams try to create as much salary-cap breathing room as possible.
Under NFL rules, they have to be in compliance with the salary cap by the start of the league year Tuesday afternoon.
And NFL teams want to have the financial flexibility to retain their own players or compete for players via free agency.
Now, New Orleans Saints offensive guard Jahri Evans and Atlanta Falcons cornerback Dunta Robinson have restructured their deals, according to league sources with knowledge of the situation.
Signed to a seven-year, $56.7 million contract two years ago, Evans has reduced his base salary for 2012 to $700,000 from $3 million in exchange for being given a $2 million signing bonus that's now prorated through the 2016 season.
His new salary-cap figure for 2012 is $3.36 million, down from $5.2 million for a savings of $1.84 million.
His base salaries and salary-cap figures going forward are $7.2 million salary, $9.86 million cap figure (2013), $6.8 million salary, $9.96 million cap figure (2014), $6.8 million salary, $9.96 million cap figure (2015) and $8 million salary, $9.16 million cap figure (2016).
The Saints used the franchise tag to retain quarterback Drew Brees and could use the money toward trying to sign him or other free agents.
Robinson waived his $3 million option bonus and reduced his base salary by $1 million for a total savings of $1.75 million against the salary cap this year.
BR> Now, his salary-cap figure for 2012 is down to $6 million from $7.75 million. His $5 million base salary is fully guaranteed for skill, injury and cap.
His base salary for 2013 is $8 million with $3 million fully guaranteed for skill, injury and cap as long as he's on the roster bonus on the fifth day of the league year. He carries a $9 million salary-cap figure that year.
In 2014, salary is $10 million and his salary cap figure is $11 million.
BR> In the final year of his contract in 2015, his salary cap figure rises to $12.5 million and his base salary is $11.5 million.
