Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Mike Patterson has been ruled out for training camp.
According to the Eagles, an X-ray and CT scan discovered that Patterson isn't completely healthy after undergoing brain surgery in January to repair an arteriovenous malformation.
He'll be placed on the reserve-non-football injury list.
He was expected to be back in six months, but after the results of the surgery were examined last week it was determined that it would be smarter to allow him more time to heal.
"I think what the physician wanted to see was how the healing was with the cranium where they took the piece of the skull away to do the procedure," head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder said. "He wasn't totally happy with it. He said he liked the healing, but he's concerned about some very small situations that (Patterson) can into in football, so right now he's going to hold off.
"We thought he would be ready because today is six months since the surgery, and he's not. That's just what happens with healing, everybody heals differently. We anticipate that he'll up fully and be back playing again, it's just not today."
It's not regarded as a career-threatening situation.
"I think we're all optimistic that he's going to play again, it's just not today," Burkholder said.
Added Patterson: "I have no doubt in my mind. At one point in time, I feel like I'll be out here."
