Here are some highlights from Jaguars general manager David Caldwell's Friday press conference:
On the slew of NFL head coaching hires in recent days speeding up the process: "No, there was no sense of urgency to get it done. We had some really good candidates, who were here, that will be really good head coaches at some point in time. There were some really good coaches that we didn't get to that will be really good head coaches at some point in time. After the day with Gus, I knew vision aligned with what we wanted to do here and it was an easy decision."
On head coach Gus Bradley's passion being important: "It's extremely important. What's more important than that is that it's genuine, as you guys can see. He is truly a leader of men. On top of everything else, he is a brilliant football mind. He has got a high football IQ, and what he has done with young players at Seattle. They were the second third youngest team in the NFL the last two years and still being a top tier defense
that is pretty impressive. They have done it without necessarily high draft picks or high-priced free agents. That was very appealing to me."
On if anything about head coach Bradley surprised him: "Nothing he really said surprised me. We had a lot of the similar vision on how we wanted this team to be built, and there was nothing really surprising to me. I think we have had the philosophy throughout our careers on what our focus was. Our focus was the job we had at hand, it was never to be a GM or a head coach. It was let's do the best we can and that what we
will do here: the best we can. "
On if he would've waited to interview head coach Bradley if Seattle was still in playoffs: "He was a guy that I was always interested in because I did a lot of work with Atlanta, thinking we were going to play them. I saw their defense and seeing how fast they played and how aggressive they played with young guys and knowing that over the last few years, he has had such a track record of success there in that system with the young guys. Then, I started doing some research and his name kept popping up and I thought this is an interesting guy. I had never met him and had no relationship whatsoever with him. So if I didn't find the right guy, he would have been a guy we would have waited for."
On evaluating the roster: "To be honest with you, I wanted to do this in phases. When I got the job here, my sole focus was on getting the head coach. I haven't done any more since then. This has been so time consuming in doing the research and the background, the candidates and the travel and this and that. The main thing was for us to get that (a head coach)."
