Quarterback David Garrard and the New York Jets are close to reaching a contract, according to a report from ESPN.
The deal would give Mark Sanchez competition for the starting job in 2013, as well as be a final nail in the coffin for Tim Tebow's time in the Big Apple.
Earlier this offseason, the Jets released Bart Scott, Eric Smith, Calvin Pace and Jason Smith, which freed up over $30 million in cap space. This would easily help the Jets land Garrard, who would be penciled in as a clear No. 2 quarterback with a lot of work to do to unseat Sanchez.
Garrard has not taken a snap since 2010 when he was last with Jacksonville.
