NFL issues statement on former Patriot Aaron Hernandez's status by Aaron Wilson of Scout.com, June 27, 2013 at 10:10 pm ET Aaron Hernandez Profile Released by the New England Patriots after he was arrested and charged with murder and multiple gun charges, former Pro Bowl tight end Aaron Hernandez cleared waivers and is now officially a free agent. However, NFL teams aren't free to sign Hernandez at this time under the unlikely scenario that they were so inclined to add a player who could potentially be incarcerated for life if he's convicted of first-degree murder. The league issued the following statement regarding Hernandez's limbo status: "NFL clubs were advised today that if Aaron Hernandez enters into a player contract prior to the resolution of the charges pending against him, the contract will not be approved or take effect until Commissioner Roger Goodell holds a hearing. The purpose of the hearing would be to determine whether Hernandez should be suspended or face other action prior to the charges being resolved."
