Bears release two players and sign Odom

The Bears opened two-week practice session at Halas Hall today. The team decided to part ways with two players that most recently played in NFL Europe.

DT Curry Dawson and CB Travis Coleman were released by the Bears Tuesday in what will inevitably be the first of many such roster moves between now and the beginning of the regular season. Dawson and Coleman played with the Berlin Thunder during the 2003 NFL Europe campaign.

Dawson, a 6'6 defensive tackle from Angelo State, and Coleman, a 5'10 185 pound cornerback out of Hampton, had spent time with the Bears last year.

The Bears drafted 6'2 315 lb. DT Ian Scott and 6'2 290 lb. DT Tron LaFavor from Florida in April of 2003. 6'1 196 lb. CB Charles Tillman from Louisiana-Lafayette was also picked up in this year's draft.

The Bears signed sixth-round draft pick Joe Odom Monday to a three-year contract. Odom is the first of the Bears' 12 draft picks from 2003 to sign with the team. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Odom was a four-year letterman at Purdue, twice earning all-Big Ten Conference honors while starting at the inside and outside LB positions. The Bethalto, Ill. native moved into the starting lineup late in his freshman year en route to starting 32 of 46 career games played. He finished his career with 244 tackles, including seven sacks and 24 TFLs, plus 11 PDs, four INTs, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and two blocked kicks.

Odom, a 6-1, 238-pound linebacker from Purdue, was the first of two sixth-round picks for Chicago this year, selected 191st overall.

Defensive end Michael Haynes (1st round, 14th overall), quarterback Rex Grossman (1st round, 22nd overall), cornerback Charles Tillman (2nd round, 35th overall), linebacker Lance Briggs (3rd round, 68th overall), safety Todd Johnson (4th round, 100th overall), defensive tackle Ian Scott (4th round, 116th overall), wide receiver Bobby Wade (5th round, 139th overall), wide receiver Justin Gage (5th round, 143rd overall), defensive tackle Tron LaFavor (5th round, 171st overall), running back Brock Forsey (6th round, 206th overall) and guard Bryan Anderson (7th round, 261st overall) are the eleven remaining Bears draft choices that have not signed.
