As a freshman and sophomore, Mercilus had two sacks. As a junior, he led the nation and tied Simeon Rice's school record with 16 sacks and had a stunning nine forced fumbles—the second-most in NCAA history. He won the Ted Hendricks Award as the nation's top defensive end.

Mercilus has the speed to get around the corner and the length to keep linemen at bay. Could play DE in a 4-3 or OLB in a 3-4.
