Analysis: Studying the 12 picks of Ponder

Christian Ponder's interceptions this year have come on first, second and third down, but there are common factors in most of the dozen interceptions he has thrown. We look at the situations and break down the plays for each of them after reviewing them all on film.

After becoming the last starting quarterback to throw an interception this season (seems like a long time ago, doesn't it?), Christian Ponder caught up to many of the other starters in the NFL. Ponder has thrown 12 interceptions this year, with 12 other quarterbacks now having thrown more.

Averaging 1½ interceptions per game the last eight games, turnovers have now become of a focal point of Leslie Frazier's weekly mantra – concentrating on the running game and defense to win and publicly supporting Ponder even when he throws for less than 100 yards.

Six of his 12 interceptions came on third down and six of them came on the road, but it appears that two things really influence when he throws interception more than anything – throwing on the run and not setting his feet even when he is in the pocket.

Ponder in the preseason started talking about doing a better job and moving up in the pocket, but he still isn't consistent enough with it.

"There are still some things where he does get a little off kilter with his mechanics," Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said. "We'll continue working on his mechanics. That's a major part of a quarterback's success, whether it be moving around in the pocket, stepping up or moving to the left or to the right. All these things are part of him being successful. We're always working on his fundamentals and his technique at the position and we'll continue to do that. We've had some improvement, but we'll continue to work to see more improvement. But he has to be comfortable in the pocket. He has to be sure of himself. And he has to make certain throws in order for us to be successful."

On seven of Ponder's 12 interceptions, he either was running out of the pocket or drifting into pressure from the edges instead of finding the pocket in front of him. At times, that results in Ponder on the edges for a positive-yardage scramble, but when he has thrown interceptions from outside of the pocket, he rarely sets he feet to fire and step into his throws.

Frazier said Ponder's protection has been "pretty good," but it appears at times Ponder is too quick to drift or run.

"I think we've done a pretty good job in protection for the most part. We've had some breakdowns on occasion, but for the most part we've done a pretty good job," Frazier said. "And he's stood in there. We've just got to be able to get him more consistent with staying in the pocket and going through his progressions. When he does that, he's very good at what he does. We've just got to continuously stay on him to do it and watch him grow in doing it."

That would appear to be the first step in getting him to become more consistent with his accuracy. He is much better when he steps into his throws, but too often he starts shuffling or running and doesn't reset to throw.

The following is a list of all 12 of his interceptions after reviewing each of them on film:

No. 1 – Ponder's first interception came on third-and-11 from the Titans' 26-yard line in the second quarter with the Vikings leading 13-0. He was flushed from the pocket with a four-man rush, rolled to his left and threw on the run down the left sideline. The pass was high and behind Kyle Rudolph, who tipped the ball, which hit another defensive back before it was intercepted by Robert Johnson. Net result: The Vikings were in field goal position and lost out on a likely three points, but the Vikings still won the game.

No. 2 – This one also came in Week 5 against the Titans. Although it came in the third quarter, it was on the ensuing possession after Ponder threw his first interception of the season. The Vikings were facing third-and-12, still leading 13-0, and had just crossed midfield. He stepped up in the pocket facing a four-man rush, as he should have, and fired for Jerome Simpson, who was heading into double coverage, but it was the third man underneath Simpson, Jordan Babineaux, that came away with the interception.

No. 3 – With the Vikings trailing 24-12 early in the fourth quarter at Washington and facing third-and-12, Ponder stepped up in the pocket facing a four-man rush and tossed a soft pass to Michael Jenkins just beyond the line of scrimmage. The ball floated over Jenkins' hands to Madieu Williams, who returned the interception 24 yards for a touchdown. Like his first interception of the season, footwork was a problem.

No. 4 – With fading hope of a win at Washington, trailing by two scores with less than 30 seconds to play, the Vikings faced third-and-goal from 3-yard line and a four-man rush. Ponder felt pressure after four seconds and lofted a weak pass to the middle of the end zone while backpedalling. The ball was intended for Percy Harvin, but DeAngelo Hall hardly had to move to make the interception underneath Harvin.

No. 5 – With a 7-0 lead at home against the Arizona Cardinals and the ball at his own 13-yard line at the start of the second quarter, Ponder faced second-and-13. The Cardinals rushed seven and got him flushed out of the pocket to the right, where he spotted Kyle Rudolph running parallel to him behind the line of scrimmage. Without setting his feet, Ponder flipped a soft pass high and behind his tight end, making it an easy interception for Paris Lenon. The Cardinals tied the game by making Minnesota pay for the interception with a touchdown.

No. 6 – For the third game in a row, Ponder threw multiple interceptions when he finished the second quarter of the Cardinals game with an interception. The Vikings had resumed the lead, 14-7, when Ponder faced third-and-2 from his own 21-yard line. He felt the pressure of a four-man rush and was shuffling his feet as he approached the sideline and lofted a weak off-balance throw intended for Adrian Peterson 10 yards downfield that Sam Acho dove to intercept. Fortunately for Ponder, the Cardinals missed a field goal on the next play as time in the first half expired.

No. 7 – With the game already out of hand, 36-17, at Mall of America Field and a minute to play, this might be the most inconsequential interception of the season for Ponder. Facing first-and-10 at Tampa Bay's 20-yard line, Ponder faced a three-man rush, held in the pocket and stepped into this interception, but he didn't get it high enough 10 yards downfield along the right sideline to Michael Jenkins and Leonard Johnson was able to make the interception underneath.

No. 8 – Trailing 30-20 at Seattle and facing third-and-5 on his own 25-yard line with 5:36 to play, Ponder faced a five-man rush. He took a quick three-step drop from the shotgun formation and lofted a predetermined throw down the left sideline for Percy Harvin, who was tightly covered by Brandon Browner, and the cornerback was in perfect position for the interception. A catch by Harvin wouldn't have mattered anyway because he had stepped out of bounds. From there, the Seahawks were able to milk the clock until the game's expiration.

No. 9 – Facing second-and-10 at his own 25-yard line and trailing Chicago 18-3 with 2:08 to go in the second quarter, the Vikings tried to use a play-action fake to Adrian Peterson to draw the linebackers up. It worked. Chicago rushed five, but Ponder threw behind and over Devin Aromashodu, who was running a crossing route 15 yards downfield. Safety Chris Conte intercepted the ball 10 yards behind Aromashodu. Conte returned the ball 35 yards, and Jay Cutler daggered the Vikings with a touchdown pass on the next play to give Chicago a 25-3 halftime lead.

No. 10 – Perhaps the most critical interception of the season came in the Green Bay game two weeks ago. The Vikings were leading 14-10 one minute into the third quarter and looking to capitalize on a 48-yard run by Peterson. They had second-and-6 at the Packers 8-yard line. Ponder took a deep drop and faced only minimal pressure, which he escaped to have plenty of time to survey the field in front of him. He threw on the run and across his body and didn't throw it high enough to Jenkins in the back of the end zone. Safety Morgan Burnett got the first of his two interceptions on the day, and the Packers drove into field goal position to make it a one-point game.

No. 11 – Ponder started that third quarter in Green Bay with an interception and ended it the same way. Facing first-and-10 from the Packers 25-yard line and now trailing 20-14, Ponder took a snap from the shotgun, faked the handoff to Peterson and had a great pocket to step up into. Instead, he drifted to his left, bumped into one of the four rushers and was tip-toeing when he released a late pass to Rudolph on a crossing route. Burnett stepped in front for the interception and the Packers went on an 11-minute field goal drive that iced the game.

No. 12 – With a 14-7 lead at home over the Bears and with 42 seconds left in the first half, the Vikings faced first-and-5 from their own 39-yard line. Ponder took the shotgun snap, drifted into pressure, backed up and threw off his back foot 40 yards downfield. It was about five yards short of where it need to be to hit Jarius Wright in stride, and instead ended up being an interception for Major Wright, one of three defenders in the area. The Bears didn't have enough time to take advantage of the interception, but it ended a drive that might have had enough time to at least get in field goal position for the Vikings.

The interceptions have come with a lead or trailing and in all kinds of other scenarios. But for Ponder, it's been 12 interceptions in the last eight games, many of them the result of not stepping into his throws, even when he had the chance.
