According to NBC NFL analyst Mike Clay, the Chicago Bears will sign tight end Martellus Bennett tonight. Sources with knowledge of the situation say a deal has been agreed to in principle, yet nothing is official yet.
After spending four years backing up Jason Witten in Dallas, Bennett signed a one-year deal with the Giants last season. He finished 2012 with 55 catches for 626 yards and 5 TDs.
He's a solid pass-catching option and a very good blocker as well. He's the most well-rounded tight end in this free agent class and Chicago acted quickly to snatch him.
This moves signals the Bears' intentions of moving on from Kellen Davis, who dropped the second most passes of any tight end last season. No word yet on the terms of Bennett's contract.
