Podlesh, signed to a five-year contract as a free agent in 2011, punted three seasons for the Bears. During that time he had 238 punts for 10,065 yards (42.3 gross average). He landed 82 punts inside the 20 with 12 touchbacks, one blocked punt and a net average of 39.4.
Podlesh was one of the worst punters in the league last year and ranked dead last, 33rd overall, in gross punt average (40.6 yards per punt).
He was due $1.825 million next season. The Bears will have to eat $800,000 in dead money ($400,000 in prorated bonuses for both 2014 and 2015) yet the move still clears up more than $1 million in cap space.
