Robinson could be back sooner than expected

Marcus Robinson's practiced in a pads for a second straight day Thursday, showing no ill effects from Wednesday's first practice since back surgery July 27.

However, Robinson had some soreness from Wednesday's work and will not practice Friday. Still his early return improves the possibility for a return to the lineup sooner than first expected. He will likely still miss the season opener in Baltimore, but could be back September 16 against Jacksonville.

"We anticipate if all goes well that he'll be back on the practice field all next week," said coach Dick Jauron. "And then we'll just have to see where he is. But he's kept himself in good shape.  He moved around pretty well today."

Middle linebacker Brian Urlacher returned to practice after missing several days, as well as the Arizona game, with a throat infection and temperature.

The Bears signed former Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Billy Davis with the hope of filling the hole created when Frankie Smith was lost for the season with a broken scapula in the preseason finale.

"When we lost Frankie we thought it was definitely worth a look," Jauron said. "
