Bears sign Sherrod Martin and Daniel Thomas

The Chicago Bears have signed veteran safety Sherrod Martin and running back Daniel Thomas, while releasing K Jeremiah Detmer, QB Pat Devlin and TE Jacob Maxwell.

LAKE FOREST, IL — The Chicago Bears signed S Sherrod Martin and RB Daniel Thomas to one-year contracts and waived K Jeremiah Detmer, QB Pat Devlin and TE Jacob Maxwell. Martin and Thomas both had tryouts for the Bears during this past week’s minicamp.

Martin has appeared in 72 games with 38 starts over six seasons with Carolina (2009-13) and Jacksonville (2014) after being selected by Carolina in the second round (59th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft out of Troy University. He has recorded 195 tackles, eight interceptions, 22 pass break-ups, four tackles for losses, five forced fumbles and one fumble recovery during his NFL career, adding 19 special teams stops. Last season, Martin appeared in 13 games with two starts for Jacksonville, collecting 14 tackles, one interception, two pass break-ups, one forced fumble and two special teams tackles.

Thomas has appeared in 52 games with three starts over four seasons (2011-14) with the Dolphins after being selected in the second round (62nd overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft out of Kansas State. He has carried the ball 409 times for 1,480 yards (3.6 ypc) and 10 touchdowns and caught 55 receptions for 412 yards (7.5 ypr) and three touchdowns. Last season, Thomas appeared in 12 games for the Dolphins, rushing for 168 yards and two touchdowns on 44 carries (3.8 ypc) and gathering 13 passes for 121 yards (9.3 ypr).
