Peyton Manning will not play against the Bears this week

Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak says Peyton Manning will not play this week against the Bears. Brock Osweiler will make his first career start.

The Chicago Bears will not have to face Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning this week.

“Peyton is not going to play," Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak said today. "Brock [Osweiler] is going to play this week.”

Manning will not dress for the contest, although it's debatable whether or not that's a good thing for the Bears. Manning was horrible agains the Kansas City Chiefs yesterday, completing just five passes and throwing four interceptions before being benched, and has been a shell of his former MVP self for most of the season.

Osweiler has never started a contest in his four-year NFL career, so he's a relative unknown around the league, yet not to the Bears. Offensive coordinator Adam Gase was Osweiler's quarterbacks coach in 2012 and his OC in 2013 and 2014, while John Fox was his head coach all three seasons. Because of that, the Bears are uniquely familiar with Osweiler, despite his limited action.

"He’s smart. He had the opportunity to learn under one of the best," Fox said today. "For a big man he’s got good quickness, good athleticism. I felt good about him. I didn’t get a chance to see a lot of him but when I did see him I liked what I saw."
For his career, Osweiler (6-8, 240) has completed 31 of 54 pass attempts, with 2 TDs and 1 INT. After Manning was benched on Sunday, Osweiler went 14-of-24 for 146 yards, with 1 TD and 1 INT.
