Matthews Re-signs

The Chicago Bears signed quarterback Shane Matthews today and waived long snapper Ryan Benjamin. Matthews was released Saturday (10/13) to make room on the roster for Benjamin who filled in for injured long snapper Patrick Mannelly in Sunday's game against the Cardinals (10/14).

Mannelly, who is considered one of the best at his position, felt uncomfortable on the sideline.

"It was real weird," Mannelly said. "It was real weird sitting in the locker room and watch the guys come in and get ready to play. It was the first time in four years that you know I was sitting there in the back of the room eating a piece of chicken or something not getting ready to play."

The team chose to waive Matthews because he is still recovering from a rib cage injury and was going to be inactive for the game. In fact Matthews agreed with the move.

"You know it was something he (Matthews) had thought about," Jauron said. "He thought it made a lot of sense. It certainly made a lot of sense for us and his position was whatever is best for the football team that's what I'd like to do."

Mannelly said he expects to play against Cincinnati.

The Bears also signed linebacker Devin Lemons to the practice squad and waived tight end Adam Young. Lemons was waived from the practice squad on Oct. 9.
