In the past when the Bears defense gave up 24 points it would have almost guaranteed a loss, but with Rex Grossman at the helm it was a different story.
FIRST QUARTER: K John Hall 27-yard field goal at 10:12. Key Plays: Fred Smoot picked off a deflected Rex Grossman pass rolled to the ground and then got back to his feet and rumbled into the end zone. However Dick Jauron challenged the touchdown, as Marty Booker appeared to collide with Smoot causing him to fall. The score was reversed on the replay and the Bears defense held strong and forced Washington to settle for three points. Drive: 4 plays, 0 yards, 0:17. Redskins 3, Bears 0.
FIRST QUARTER: WR Marty Booker 59-yard reception from Rex Grossman. Key plays: Jerry Azumah's 21-yard kick return was boosted by a facemask penalty by Antonio Pierce that tacked on 15-yards. Booker, who beat Pro Bowl corner Champ Bailey for the score, caught the ball and outran the Washington defense. Paul Edinger extra point was good. Drive: 1 play, 59 yards, 0:15. Bears 7, Redskins 3.
FIRST QUARTER: K Paul Edinger 19-yard field goal at 2:45. Key Plays: Grossman improvisation allowed for a 25-yard completion to Ahmad Merritt., which put Chicago into Washington territory. After a failed third down attempt Dick Jauron decided to go for it on 4th and 2. A reverse to Dez White gave the Bears more than enough for the conversion. A 20-yard reception by Stanley Pritchett gave Chicago first and goal from the 1, but they couldn't put the ball in the end zone. Drive: 12 plays, 74 yards, 5;32. Bears 10, Redskins 3.
FIRST QUARTER: RB Chad Morton 36-yard reception from Rod Gardner at 0:48. Key Plays: Tim Hasselbeck looked horrible for much of the first quarter, but a 16-yard completion to Laveranues Coles seemed to settle him down. A Steve Spurrier offense will always use some deception and the Bears bit on it, as Hasselbeck threw a lateral to Gardner, who in turn found a wide open Morton for the score. Hall extra point was good. Drive: 4 plays, 63 yards, 1:52. Bears 10, Redskins 10.
SECOND QUARTER: WR Laveranues Coles 13-yard reception from Tim Hasselbeck at 0:16. Key Plays: The Bears failed to run out the clock and Washington got one more chance to end the half. A 20-yard Chad Morton punt return gave the Redskins the ball at midfield. Hasselbeck connected with Darnerien McCants for 12 yards, Zeron Flemister for 11 and Gardner for 15. Coles then beat Azumah for the touchdown. Extra point by Hall was good. Drive: 6 plays, 50 yards, 1:23. Redskins 17, Bears 10.
THIRD QUARTER: WR Justin Gage 11-yard reception from Rex Grossman at 8;23. Key Plays: The Bears converted all three of their third down attempts. A 17-yard run by Stanley Pritchett moved the ball into Washington territory. A 12-yard completion to Gage gave the Bears first and goal from the 6. On first down the Bears had trouble getting a play called and rushed to the line of scrimmage trying to avoid a delay of game penalty. A toss play to Anthony Thomas resulted in a touchdown, but an illegal formation penalty on Aaron Gibson brought the score back. Following two misfires the Grossman went to Gage at the 5 and the receiver broke one tackle on his way to the touchdown. Extra point by Edinger was good. Drive: 13 plays, 68 yards, 6:37. Bears 17, Redskins 17.
THIRD QUARTER: RB Anthony Thomas 3-yard run at 0:34. Key Plays: Thomas accounted for 53 yards, 2 receptions for 11 yards and 7 rushes for 42 yards, on the possession. Grossman converted third downs with completions to Gage and Thomas. On Thomas' touchdown run he went over the century mark for the 9th time in his career. Extra point by Edinger was good. Drive: 12 plays, 81 yards, 6:41. Bears 24, Redskins 17.
FOURTH QUARTER: WR Laveranues Coles' 19-yard reception from Tim Hasselbeck at 12:52. Key Plays: Washington marched down the field in a hurry. Four straight completions by Hasselbeck for 14, 9, 18 and 19 tied the game. Extra point by Hall was good. Drive: 5 plays, 63 yards, 2:42. Bears 24, Redskins 24.
FOURTH QUARTER: K Paul Edinger 45-yard field goal at 0:05. Key Plays: Grossman hooked up with David Terrell on his only catch of the game for 22 yards. The play moved Chicago into Washington territory as the clock continued to tick. With under a minute to go Jauron decided to go for in on 4th and 1. Thomas got just enough for the first down. A 9-yard completion to Dez White gave Edinger just enough room to maneuver. Drive: 13 plays, 51 yards, 5:07. Bears 27, Redskins 24.
