Check the Box Part 2

In a move reminiscent of Jerry Angelo's failure to check the box, which led to Warrick Holdman getting an inflated contract and D'Wayne Bates going to Minnesota, Terrell Owens and Dennis Northcutt will not become free agents next week.

The agents of both Terrell Owens and Dennis Northcutt failed to fill out the appropriate paperwork, thus both receivers will not be able to void their contracts and will not become free agents on March 3rd. They're bound to their perspective clubs for the next three seasons.

For players that will actually be available next week it looks like the Bears will be interested in RB Thomas Jones. The former first-round pick has never lived up to expectations, but has the speed that the Bears covet from their running back. Some believe Jones has been misused in the Arizona Cardinals and Tampa Bay Bucs systems and still has the ability to be a factor in the league. He would be a relatively inexpensive option in free agency and is much younger than Duce Staley.

The Dolphins officially cut Brian Griese Friday. The Bears pursued him a year ago and Chicago is in need of depth at quarterback behind Rex Grossman.

The clock is ticking on the Bears to release Kordell Stewart, Warrick Holdman and Phillip Daniels. Roster bonuses are due on March 2nd as the team is still working on renegotiating the deals of Holdman and Daniels. Stewart is a lock not to be back in Chicago next year.
