Urlacher Named NFC Defensive Player of the Week

Lake Forest - In a week the Bears lost two major contributors on defense, another member of the unit is honored for his play against Green Bay.

Bears middle linebacker Brian Urlacher has been named NFC Player of the Week following his performance against the Packers last Sunday. The middle linebacker led Chicago for the second consecutive game with 14 tackles, including two tackles for loss.

The four-time Pro Bowler made the play of the game on one of those tackles for loss when, with the Bears leading 7-3, the Packers were driving for the go-ahead score facing a first-and-goal from the Chicago 2 with under two minutes to play in the first half. Ahman Green took the handoff and headed toward the end zone when Urlacher shot through the line and knocked the ball loose, which was scooped up by safety Mike Brown. Urlacher got to his feet and leveled the only potential tackler, Brett Favre, as Brown scampered 95 yards for a score to extend the Bears lead to 14-3. The play stands as the second-longest fumble return in Bears history behind only a 98-yard touchdown return by team founder George Halas in 1923.

Urlacher also capped the win as Green Bay drove to the Chicago 11 with under two minutes in the game. Facing a fourth-and-eight, Favre dropped back and pressure by Urlacher caused Favre to heave a desperation toss which led to an intentional grounding call securing the 11-point Bears win.

The weekly award is the third of Urlacher's career. He was honored in 2001 after recording a 90-yard fumble return for touchdown, one interception and one sack at Atlanta (Oct. 7) and again in 2002 when he recovered a fumble and added two sacks and two tackles for loss among a team-high 13 tackles.
