Bears Send 12 to Study Abroad

The Bears have had some luck finding talent in NFL Europe. This year the team has allocated 12 players to the league, including two quarterbacks.

The biggest name to be sent abroad is Kurt Kittner. The quarterback will compete for a starting with the Amsterdam Admirals and hopes to use that as a springboard to earn a spot on the Bears 53-man roster.

Jarrett Payton, son of the late Walter, has been allocated by the Tennessee Titans and will join Kittner on the Amsterdam roster.

QB Ryan Dinwiddie has the chance to be the first starting quarterback for the Hamburg Sea Devils, who are in their first year of existence. The Boise State product spent time in camp last year before being cut and eventually landing on the practice squad later in the season.

27 quarterbacks have gone on to start games in the NFL after playing in the NFL Europe League, including Henry Burris and Chad Hutchinson.

The Bears also will send WR Jamin Elliott, RB's Zack Abron and Dwone Hicks, Gs Bryan Anderson, Ben Johnson and Walter Wigfall, DE Greg White, C A.J. Ricker, and LBs Derrick Ballard and Carl Diggs.

NFL teams have allocated a record 266 players to play in Europe this spring. Of those, 102 were assigned to NFLEL teams, with a further 141 being selected in the annual NFL Allocated Player draft. Additional players, including kickers and punters, will be assigned during training camp, which opens in Tampa Bay early next month. Bear PK Nick Setta is among those included in that group.

A total of 265 players with NFLEL experience appeared on NFL rosters during this past season.

The thirteenth NFLEL season kicks off on the weekend of April 2-3, with the World Bowl XIII to be played in Düsseldorf on Saturday June 11.

Bear Report will track the progress of all Bears abroad with player diaries currently in the works.
