NFL Europe Preview - Week Two

Week Two in the NFL Europe League features matchups between three undefeated teams and three teams looking to register their first victories. In the league's lead story this week, one of those wins came with a bit of an asterisk...

NFL Europe Preview - Week Two

Berlin Thunder
Amsterdam Admirals
Cologne Centurions
Hamburg Sea Devils
Rhein Fire
Frankfurt Galaxy

It appears that the NFL's problem with referee-related pecadilloes has found its way across the pond. In the Week One game between the Hamburg Sea Devils and Cologne Centurions played on Saturday April 2, the Sea Devils faced a third-and-14 at the Centurions’ 37-yard line with 0:51 remaining in the fourth quarter.

After Hamburg gained four yards on a running play, the official game clock – as displayed on the stadium scoreboard – properly continued to run. However, at some point before reaching the 0:20 mark, the clock’s countdown increased speed and time expired prematurely before Hamburg was able to run another play. The game officials were unaware of the malfunction.

A thorough review of the situation has shown that that the malfunction was caused by an error in the computer program running the official game clock and was beyond the control of any individual.

Pursuant to NFL Europe rules, there is no question of the game being replayed or declared void. The result of the game, 24-23 to Cologne, will remain unaltered.
