Secondary Coach Search Appears Over

The Bears appear to have found a replacement for Perry Fewell for the second time.

The Sun-Times reported that coach Lovie Smith is expected to hire Steven Wilks as the new secondary coach. He has held the same position with the University of Washington in 2005.

The Bears originally hired Ron English for the job, but he backed out when the University of Michigan offered him the defensive coordinator role after spending the last three years as the Wolverines secondary coach.

The Bears were also considering former St. Louis Rams assistant secondary coach Gill Byrd, but decided on Wilks to replace Perry Fewell, who took the defensive coordinator position with the Buffalo Bills.

Wilks will be the third different man to coach the secondary in as many seasons. He spent just one season with the Huskies, after being one of just three assistants that coach Tyrone Willingham brought with him from Notre Dame, where he also spent one season.

Wilks has no previous NFL experience. He's spent the last 11 years in the college ranks at eight different stops. Along with being a defensive backs coach, he's also been a defensive coordinator and head coach.
