NFLPA Golf Outing

The Chicago Chapter of the NFLPA will be hosting its Eighth Annual 5th Quarter Celebrity Golf Classic on Monday, July 15 at the Old Orchard Country Club in Mount Prospect. Bears great Steve McMichael will serve as celebrity host during the event to a number of current and former Chicago area NFL players.

"Our chapter, currently at more than 140 members, is striving to become much more active in the community by supporting a wide range of local charities," said Classic chairman Billy Leagans. "We donate time and effort throughout the year to organizations such as the Ronald McDonald House, the American Cancer Society, the American Lung Association, and various youth organizations."

The Chicago Chapter of the National Football League Association Retired Players currently award two four year college scholarships to area youngsters. Recipients must have shown all around good citizenship, have participated in interscholastic sports competition, exhibited high academic standards, and have received no other athletic scholarship.

Last year, applications were sent to over 230 area high schools. The grant winners had 4.65 and 4.82 GPAs. Past recipients have attended universities such as Cornell, Northwestern, Stanford, Washington and Lee, and Emory.

"This outing is the only way that we can support these scholarships," said Mark Green, former Bear running back and Notre Dame graduate. "To continue and to expand this initiative, we are seeking corporate sponsorships for assistance. A donation of between $2,000 and $10,000 would be greatly appreciated. Of course, all sponsors at these levels will receive maximum exposure at the tournament."

The two recipients of the scholarships will be present at this year's outing. Among the players expected to appear are Dave Duerson, Emery Moorehead, Bob Avellini, Mike Pyle, Chuck Logan, Roland Harper, Mark Green, and Ronnie Bull. Eddie Payton will be on hand to present the 2nd annual Walter Payton Hero Award.

Included in the outing is a round of golf, lunch, dinner, prizes, a raffle and auction of NFL memorabilia, and a three hour one on one period to meet the participating players. Individuals and corporate teams are invited to participate.

"Because of the popularity of this event, tee times area at a premium and fill up quickly," Leagans said. "Reservations for this event must be received no later than Wednesday July 3."
