Continued Class

Connie Payton, the widow of Walter, recently showed once again how classy the family is under difficult circumstances.

On a Chicago edition of Fox Sports Net's "Best Damn Sports Show Period" Connie was asked about Emmitt Smith breaking the all-time rushing record currently held by her late husband.

She said that Walter was a fan of Smith and if anyone was going to break his record he would have wanted it to be the Cowboys running back.

Smith is just 539 yards away from eclipsing Payton's mark of 16,726 yards, which the back would likely reach sometime during the 2002 season.

Payton was asked if she would be in attendance for Smith's record breaking run. She replied with a resounding yes and revealed that Smith represents many of the things Walter stood for.

In fact, Smith will be honored with the second annual "Spirit of Sweetness" award Tuesday (July 23) evening in honor of the late Walter Payton.

The Walter Payton Cancer Fund will host the event with all proceeds benefiting the fund. Silent and live auctions will be held. ESPN will document the events at the Walter Payton Roundhouse Complex in Aurora. Tickets are $234 and can be purchased by calling 847-605-0034. Fine With Me: The Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund received $440,000 last year as a result of NFL player fines throughout the season. The NFL splits all players' fines among four charities, including the Piccolo fund.
