Camp Chat: Jamar Williams

Rookie linebacker Jamar Williams has Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs, and Hunter Hillenmeyer in front of him on the depth chart, but he's ready to make an immediate impact on special teams. The former Sun Devil talked to Bear Report after Tuesday's practice about the difference between Sam and Will linebacker, what he needs to work on, and what he would like to accomplish in his first season.

The Bears already have three excellent linebackers in the starting lineup, including two Pro Bowlers. Would you rather have been drafted by a team that expected you to start right away?
"I can learn a lot from those three guys. I'm glad the Bears drafted me. I couldn't have went to a better team, learned from better guys. This year I just want to try to learn as much as I can from them, try to contribute on special teams, and so far, things are going real well."

What are the main differences between Sam (strong side) and Will (weak side) linebacker? If you can play one, do you feel like you can play the other?
"Well Sam, I played more of that my last year in college. More covering tight ends, coming outside the box, playing one-on-one on slots. Will is more inside-the-box type of guy, playing between the tackles. I feel comfortable playing both, but right now, Sam is probably the most comfortable just because I played it last year."

What do you feel you're really done well so far in camp? What do you know for a fact you need to work on to get better?
"I think I just came in to try to soak up as much knowledge as possible. I've done a good job just learning, picking up the defense … I just kind of got to break some old habits, do a couple new things, learn them a little bit better, and just keep trying to go out here every day and just work hard. And hopefully, toward the season comes, I can get in the mix on D."

Monday night was Family Night out here in Bourbonnais. Compare the fan support at Arizona State versus what you've seen so far with the Chicago Bears.
"Man, it's just crazy, man. I've never seen anything like this. You just have so many people out here just wanting to see practice. At Arizona State … we had closed practices, so you don't see too many fans at our practices. But just coming out here and seeing all these fans out here just to watch us practice is incredible."

Obviously the goal is to win the Super Bowl, and many people think you have the team to do it. What would you like to accomplish personally during your rookie season?
"Personally, I just want to come in and try to soak up as much knowledge as I can from Brian, Lance, and Hunter, and just try to contribute as much as I can on special teams and help reach that Super Bowl goal."
