LAKE FOREST, IL – Rigo Schmelzer of Bloomington High School was named the Chicago Bears High School "Coach of the Week" Tuesday.
Schmelzer, in his ninth year as head coach, led Bloomington to a 39-22 win over Danville, the team's 26th consecutive regular-season victory. The Purple Raiders' senior class, ranked No. 2 in the state this season, has amassed a 28-2 record since entering high school and they are joined by a junior class which went 9-0 as sophomores.
In honor of Schmelzer, $1500 will be donated to Bloomington's football program. Schmelzer will be invited to the Bears-Jets game on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, and will be recognized in an on-field ceremony that day. Honorees will also receive a framed certificate, attend a Bears' practice and "chalk-talk" with Bears Head Coach Dick Jauron.
The Coach of the Week is selected each Monday and encompasses the state of Illinois and northwest Indiana.
