NFL Draft Buzz: Thursday, April 12

Jason McKie signed a contract extension through 2011 back on Nov. 2, but the Bears have shown interest in a few fullbacks leading up to the draft. Ed Thompson learned about yet another lead blocker they've talked to on Thursday. On top of that, he sheds some light on a safety and a linebacker that could call Chicago home very soon. Get the latest with Scout.com's Daily Draft Buzz.

During a recent interview, South Carolina safety Fred Bennett told me that he had a visit with the Chargers on Tuesday the 10th and would be heading to New York to visit the Giants on the 17th. The three-year starter was also obviously drawing some strong interest from the Texans, who worked him out at his Pro Day.

But the Giants definitely have a bead on him as he also spoke to them during his formal interviews at the NFL Combine. Bennett says he also met with the Saints, Redskins, Panthers, Rams and Falcons while he was in Indianapolis. Watch for my interview with Bennett this week at Scout.com for more details and to learn more about him ...

One of my NFL sources told me that Miami head coach Cam Cameron made the trip to Stanford to watch quarterback Trent Edwards throw passes to San Jose State wide receiver James Jones, giving him a good look at two prospects for the Dolphins with one visit. Jones has also drawn some interest from the Lions ...

Florida fullback and special teams ace Billy Latsko told me today during an interview that he drew some strong interest from the Jaguars, who ran his position drills during his Pro Day. He said the Chiefs, Lions and Redskins also watched him go through his paces. A number of other teams that recognized his value as a blocker and as a big contributor on special teams stopped to talk and ask him a few questions, including the Patriots, Colts, Eagles, Dolphins, Bengals and the Chicago Bears. You can check out my interview with Latsko in the next few days at Scout.com for more details ...

Washington State safety Eric Frampton told me that he has a personal workout scheduled with the 49ers on April 20th. He's drawn interest from the Bears, Raiders, Falcons, Broncos and Bengals previously at the Combine. If you missed my interview series with one of this year's most underrated safeties, be sure to click here for Part I and then here for Part II ...

Washington State LB Mkristo Bruce (AP Photo/Joe Barrentine)

While we're talking about Washington State players, I had the opportunity to talk to linebacker Mkristo Bruce this week, who will work out for the Seahawks this Friday. He also talked to Seattle coaches during a formal interview at the Combine and sat down for formal interviews with the Bears and Steelers, as well. His interview will be published early next week at Scout.com ...

Back on April 5th, I told you that Florida DE Ray McDonald had completed a pre-draft visit with the Buccaneers and had an upcoming visit with the Ravens. This week, he let me know that he's now got two more teams on his list. He'll be visiting the 49ers on Sunday the 15th and the Saints on Monday the 16th.

The 6'4", 276-pound lineman drew serious interest at his Pro Day from the Giants, Jets, Chiefs, and Panthers, who also held formal interviews with him at the Combine. Other teams that sat down with him for formal interviews in Indianapolis included the Browns, Saints, Dolphins, Steelers, Bengals, Falcons and 49ers ...

Fresno State center Kyle Young, who started 47 consecutive contests prior to a four-game academic suspension during his senior year, has bounced back with strong appearances in the Hula Bowl and East-West Shrine Game to regain some confidence from NFL teams who may have been questioning his character.

Young told me today that he made a huge mistake focusing too much on his future football career and overlooked his day-to-day obligations to his academics. But he said it was a very valuable life lesson that's going to make him a better person in the long run. Teams are starting to take notice again of the player who has long been considered one of the top five centers in this draft class, partly due to his consistency and durability.

At his Pro Day, Young said the Dolphins, Jets, Browns and Seahawks spent some time with him. Watch for my interview with Kyle that will be published next week at Scout.com.
