Bears add defensive depth

LAKE FOREST, IL - The Bears placed linebacker Warrick Holdman on Injured Reserve Tuesday and signed defensive tackle Ernest Grant to a two-year contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Bears also released wide receiver Edell Shepherd from the practice squad and signed linebacker Kiah Johnson.

Holdman injured his right knee Sunday against the Bills and underwent surgery Monday to repair his lateral meniscus.

While Grant, a 6-5, 312 pounder out of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, was signed Sept. 24 but released Sept. 27 with the activation of fullback Daimon Shelton. Grant played in 11games with three starts for the Miami Dolphins in 2001, making 22 tackles and recording half a sack. Originally drafted by the Dolphins in the sixth round of the 2000 draft (167th overall), Grant was inactive in 12 games as a rookie, dressed but did not play in two others and made his NFL debut against Buffalo (10/8) and played at Detroit (11/5) where he recorded his first career NFL tackle against the Lions.

Johnson was originally signed on April 29 and participated in the Bears training camp before his release on Aug. 26.
