NFL Draft Buzz: Bears Dig Davis

Matt Forte was terrific as a rookie for the Chicago Bears, but he got almost no help behind him in the backfield. Even though Kevin Jones was re-signed during free agency, it's still possible that GM Jerry Angelo goes after another ball carrier. Clemson's James Davis says the Bears like him a lot.

As great as Matt Forte was both rushing and receiving straight out of college for the Bears this past season, Chicago was still only 24th in the league on the ground at 104.6 yards per game.

Forte made a convincing case for Offensive Rookie of the Year and looks to be the next great back for this franchise, but he wore down in December because of a painful toe injury. The not so monstrous three-headed monster of Kevin Jones, Adrian Peterson, and Garrett Wolfe offered little in terms of assistance, so general manager Jerry Angelo knows he has to find a secondary option at tailback in order to take the running game to the next level and protect Forte for the future. Even though Jones re-signed with the club after briefly flirting with the Bills, Angelo could very well add another ball carrier in next month's NFL Draft.

According to Clemson's James Davis, the Bears are one of three teams that have shown the most interest in him leading up to the last weekend in April.

One of the more decorated running backs in school history, Davis (5-11, 218) rushed for 3,984 yards and scored 47 touchdowns on the ground for the Tigers while averaging 5.3 yards per carry. Sharing the backfield with C.J. Spiller his final three seasons in Clemson, Davis doesn't have much experience as a pass catcher and was only credited with 51 career receptions – never more than 19 in any one season. But he's very strong between the tackles and has a nose for the end zone, making worthy him of a pick toward the end of Round 2 or beginning of Round 3.

Davis says both the Broncos and Packers have also been hot for his services, with Denver leading the charge and Green Bay bringing up the rear.
