Craig Steltz, Al Afalava and Josh Bullocks. Although he didn't make very many highlight-reel plays during veteran minicamp last month, the 6-0, 206-pounder stepped in front of a Caleb Hanie pass intended for Rashied Davis to record an interception the first week of OTAs. Defensive backs coach Jon Hoke has spoken highly of Wright's intangibles and football smarts, so maybe those traits will come to the surface even more as he begins to develop and understands the scheme better.
Chicago seems to have its top safeties playing out of position, with Danieal Manning at strong and Chris Harris at free, but if Wright proves up to the challenge, perhaps he can start at free, kick Harris down to strong and force Manning to nickel back.Israel Idonije and Jarron Gilbert and the second-team defense. The coaching staff is once again siding with Mark Anderson and prefers him to be the starter opposite free-agent acquisition Julius Peppers, but the Bears play at least three pass rushers on a regular basis and sometimes four based on their personnel from week to week. All five of the aforementioned D-ends have lined up on both the right and left side throughout the offseason program, and while we'll probably see some flip-flopping here and there on game day, coach Lovie Smith has always believed in having a starting "right" end and a starting "left" end.
With Gilbert not yet living up to his potential, not to mention the fact that he could still end up inside at tackle, Wootton has a chance to work his way into the rotation and contribute off the bench as a rookie.Corey Graham and D.J. Moore are lining up at nickel back most of the time and not getting as many reps at corner. Zack Bowman and Charles Tillman are locked in as the starters on the left and right side, respectively, but Joshua Moore has been getting second-unit time opposite Woodny Turenne and free-agent signee Tim Jennings. Known as more of a one-on-one cover man than a zone defender in college, Moore is learning an entirely different system but has shown quality instincts to this point.
Assuming Graham sticks at nickel, which is essentially a 12th starter on defense in this system, Moore has as good a shot as any to emerge as the primary backup to Bowman and Tillman in training camp, but he would be wise to brush up on his special-teams responsibilities.Jay Cutler need as many reps as they can get if they want to master Mike Martz's offense in time for the season opener in September. In the mean time, the 6-3, 230-pound LeFevour is relegated to positional drills and hasn't been given a single snap in either 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 in quite some time.
LeFevour is going to be a part of the 53-man roster since he'll never make it through waivers for the purpose of putting him on the practice squad, but he's nothing but a clipboard carrier in 2010.Kevin Shaffer until last week, leaving plenty of reps for Webb and giving him a chance to square off with the likes of Idonije and Gilbert in 11-on-11. A monster of a young man at 6-8 and 325 pounds, he has proven to be a quality athlete and doesn't look to be the least bit stiff.
He could survive the final cut if he does well for himself in the preseason, but with guard much more up in the air right now than tackle, Webb seems destined for a year of seasoning on the practice squad.
