Players And Coaches Penalized In Aftermath of Sunday's Bengals Give-Away

The hard-hitting AFC Wild Card playoff between the Bengals and hated Steelers was hit with some hefty fines.

The NFL on Friday handed out fines stemming from play by both teams totaling more than $80,000.

The six fines were announced six days after the Bengals were beaten 18-16 by Pittsburgh in Saturday's drama-filled contest at Paul Brown Stadium.

They bring to more than $200,000 the total from the last two Bengals-Steelers games.

Following the Dec. 13 regular-season battle, both teams were reportedly fined a combined $145,000.

Players fined following Sunday's Cincinnati debacle include Bengals cornerback Adam Jones $28,940 for contacting an official, Bengals defensive linemen Domata Peko and Wallace Gilberry $8,681 each for unnecessary roughness penalties, and Steelers guard Ramon Foster $17,363 for a leg whip.

Steelers linebackers coach Joey Porter and assistant coach Mike Munchak were reportedly fined $10,000 apiece, Porter for coming onto the field in the fourth quarter. That precipitated Adam Jones’ 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which led to the Steeler's kicking a 35-yard go-ahead field goal in the final seconds that won it. Munchak was fined for unsportsmanlike conduct after pulling Reggie Nelson’s hair on the sideline.

The penalized don't include Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier, who drove the top of his helmet into the jaw of the Bengals' Giovani Bernard, knocking the running back unconscious and resulting in a concussion and a fumble.

Also in the wake of Saturday's rough-and-tumble contest is the news that Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown will miss this weekend's AFC divisional playoff at Denver with a concussion.

Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict was suspended for the first three games of next season following a shoulder-to-helmet hit on Brown in Saturday's game. Burfict, reportedly appealing his suspension, was not additionally fined Friday for the hit on Brown or for running onto the field to confront Steelers players following Bernard’s concussion. Burfict's suspension will be without pay.
