"We have been talking all week," Eguae tells Inside The Auburn Tigers about sharing the decision-making process with his family. "I took the visit to Texas Tech really just to compare the two schools and all my trips. I wanted to weigh the positives and negatives of everything. I wanted to make sure the decision to attend Auburn University was the right one for me. After I got back I really knew the place for me was Auburn."
With a visit scheduled with new Auburn coach Gene Chizik on Monday at Mansfield Summit High along with several Tiger assistant coaches, Eguae says he had already decided to pull the trigger and commit, but he didn't want the coaches to know until he had let them do their thing.
"It was in the afternoon," Eguae says. "We were in my coach's office with coach (Gene) Chizik and coach (Curtis) Luper and coach (Tracy) Rocker. We were all in the office along with my mom.
"I knew they were coming to town," he adds. "Coach Chizik really wanted to meet my parents. Getting him in town to talk to my parents about Auburn, they really didn't know I was committing today. I kind of caught them by surprise. That was real nice."
A player that has the ability to play outside and could grow into an inside guy down the road, the 6-3, 244 Eguae says that when he told the Auburn coaches that he was going to be a Tiger the room just erupted.
"It was crazy," Eguae says. "At the end he was asking me how I felt about everything. I was rambling on different things and at the end I told him I felt like the place for me was Auburn. I told him War Eagle! After that they all pretty much jumped up. It was pandemonium from there with everybody hugging."
Relationships are the lifeblood of just about any recruiting season. On the job just a few weeks, Chizik and his staff have already shown the ability to go into Texas and land players because of their ties to the state in recent years. Eguae says those relationships were big for him and, although he loved his Auburn visit, the connection with the coaching staff and particularly Rocker proved to be the biggest reason why he chose to be an Auburn Tiger.
"Right when I got there I saw the stadium and the facilities and all that really popped out," Eguae says. "It was optimistic for me at first because it was my first time seeing an SEC school of that stature. All that was nice and cool, but they have that at all of the rest of the places too.
"What stood out for me was when I had that first meeting with coach Rocker," he adds. "We talked about 10 or 15 minutes. That's what really got me. All that other stuff, the stadium, all that is nice, but it's the guy that's going to coach you up so you can make plays in that stadium that really counts. With coach Rocker, to see his résumé, it's just freaky. Players that I look up to like DeMarcus Ware and Osi Umenyiora, for him to coach them at the same age that I'm about to be is just freaky."
