Trent Edwards Scouting Report
Measureables: 6'4", 231 lbs., 26 years old- Stanford
In just over three years with the Bills, Edwards has made 32 starts, while completing just under 61 percent of his throws for 5,639 yards with 25 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. Edwards best season as a pro came in 2008, his second year in the league. Edwards started 14 games, completing better than 65 percent of his throws for nearly 2,700 yards with 14 total touchdowns (three rushing) and 10 interceptions. Edwards finished with a quarterback rating of 85.4.
Scouting report from Football Outsiders and Yahoo Sports columnist Doug Farrar—
Edwards would end up being one of those guys who was decent in a certain college system, but the attributes that took him through Stanford and made him an attractive draft prospect – size, intelligence, and the ability to understand offensive systems – didn't do him enough good in the pros. While he has a decent deep ball, Edwards can't get that across on a regular basis. In a series of limited offensive systems, Edwards seemed to limit himself further – he would check down even more when schemes fenced him in, and he has appeared befuddled at best under pressure. Edwards is a decent backup, but his limitations will prevent him from ever becoming a solid starter. The Bills have the worst quarterback situation in the league, and Edwards' inability to make the cut there should tell you all you need to know.
So what will Trent Edwards do for the Jaguars?
Trent Edwards gives the Jaguars an insurance policy and perhaps the ability to push David Garrard. Edwards likely won't be ready to play before the bye week comes and goes, due to him having to learn Dirk Koetter's system and terminology.
If Jaguars starter David Garrard continues to go in the tank, the Jaguars will have a younger, talented option to insert into a game. If Edwards plays well, he would likely be retained next season and at 26 years old, he could be the perfect quarterback to take over while they groom a young draft pick.
