Key Matchups in Bills Matchup against Texans

The Buffalo Bills will be looking to get back to their winning ways against the Houston Texans. These are three key matchups that should play a major role in who wins this game.

Sammy Watkins vs. Johnathan Joseph

Sammy Watkins is the rising rookie and will be matched up with Johnathan Joseph, who is one of the premier cornerbacks in the game. Watkins has had an up and down season with a breakout game against the Dolphins with eight receptions, 117 yards and one touchdown. The other two games this year he has combined for five receptions and 50 yards.

Johnathan Joseph is a physical cornerback who joined the Texans in 2011 and will most likely be lined up against Watkins for most of the day. The longer Joseph is able to stay with Watkins, the tougher E.J. Manuel’s job will be.

Texans Defensive Line vs. Bills Offensive Line

The Bills offensive line struggled last week against the Chargers and their assignment doesn’t get any easier this week against Houston. The Texans have arguably the best defensive lineman in the NFL, J.J. Watt, and they will need to have their best to stop him.

The Bills will most likely have a new starter this week with Chris Williams nursing a back injury. If Williams is not able to go, the team will look to rookie Cyril Richardson to fill the void at left guard. Richardson is a huge player and was an excellent run blocker in college. The Bills hope that this will translate to the NFL.

Arian Foster/Alfred Blue vs. Bills Run Defense

This game is going to be a battle of strengths with the Bills run defense and Texans rushing offense near the top of the league. The Texans currently rank seventh in the NFL in rushing yards but could be without their featured back, Arian Foster, who will be a game-time decision.

This doesn’t mean the Bills defense can relax as Alfred Blue is a talented back, who averaged six yards a carry last week against the New York Giants. The Bills defense has been excellent this year against the run, currently ranking fifth and giving up 83 yards per game. This matchup could be the deciding factor in who wins this game.
